Young People's Studios and High School Studios
Nurture the creative journey.

Help K-8 graders jumpstart their lifelong connection to creativity. With support from professional instructors, these weekend and summer classes can help young people learn to express themselves, think critically, and build confidence through artistic exploration.

High school students can hone their creative voices and prepare to apply to competitive undergraduate art and design programs with dedicated support from MICA faculty. These programs and courses provide a pathway for young artists to explore their creative interests and grow as artists and designers.

Young People's Studios
Grades 3-5
Story-telling through Masks and Puppets (at The St. Paul's Schools)
Session 1: June 13 - June 24; 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm
Grades 3-5: Puppetry and expressive masks have served as a traditional intersection between the visual arts and theater. Puppets are powerful symbols that bring characters to life, tell stories, transmit cultural traditions or provide comic pleasure. Similarly, masks have long been used by different people from around the world as a means of expressing and celebrating ideas and events important to their culture. In this course, students select from a variety of media to construct puppets and masks to tell personal stories. Half art-making and half collaboration and performance, this course provides students with a unique venue for expressing both visually and through dramatic performance.

Making Art with Dinosaurs! (at The St. Paul's Schools)
Late Session: July 25 - July 29
9:30 am - 3:30 pm
Grades K-2: Come with us on an imaginary journey through the Jurassic period. Encounter ancient reptiles, prehistoric plants, and uncover fascinating fossils! Using ideas and experiences from our archeological journeys, students create drawings, paintings, and sculptural forms to create personal visual responses to what they have discovered.

Grades 6-8
Drawing Workshop for Middle School (at The St. Paul's Schools)
Late Session: July 25 - July 29; 9:30 am - 3:30 pm
Grades 6-8: Fast-paced drawing course engages students in a variety of short and sustained studies intended to develop drawing skills and abilities. Different approaches, tools, materials, and techniques are presented and explored using a diverse range of drawing media, from pen and pencil to color explorations in pastel and paint. Students create drawings from observation, imagination, and in response to the art of master artists and their peers. Written reflection, self-assessment, and ability to participate in group critiques are key components of this course.

Real and Fanciful Landscapes (at The St. Paul's Schools)
Late Session: July 25 - July 29; 9:30 am - 3:30 pm
Grades 3-5: In this introductory landscape course, students take a fantastic journey into some truly unusual landscapes. Using children’s literature as inspiration, students embark upon fanciful journeys into a colorful world of realistic, personal, and fanciful landscapes. They will create cityscapes, oceanscapes, and scenes from both an insect’s point of view and a birds-eye view. From there, they will journey to far-away places to capture moonscapes and underwater seascapes. Emphasis is on problem-solving, exercising the imagination, using writing to enhance fanciful scenes, and experimentation with a variety of materials and techniques.

Digital Illustration (Grades 9-12)
Late Session: July 25 - July 29; 9:30 am - 3:30 pm
Grades 9-12: In this class, students will explore how to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for a variety of drawings and designs! Students will learn about character development, portraiture, settings and environments, design, and metaphorical approaches to making. Access to the Adobe Creative Suite is included for the duration of this course.

Exploring Color Media (Grades 6-8)
Late Session: July 25 - July 29; 9:30 am - 3:30 pm
Grades 6-8: Using a variety of dry and wet color media, students explore the powerful role of color on an artwork’s mood, atmosphere, and overall visual impact. To make informed decisions about color, students first learn color relationships and color theory as they create a series of related compositions that reflect specific color schemes. Throughout the course, students view the works of master painters as inspiration for the infinite ways color can be utilized for stylistic and expressive purposes.

Art Inspired by Nature (Grades 3-5)
Late Session: July 25 - July 29; 9:30 am - 3:30 pm
Grades 3-5: In this course, students look at the natural world around them as inspiration for creating their art. This course spans a wide range of art processes, media, and dimensions (2D and 3D) such as drawing from observing nature, sculpting nature-inspired forms, using natural materials for mixed media collage, recording changes in nature, and much more. Through looking at the work of artists including Georgia O’Keeffe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Sumi brush painters, and Native American artists, students determine the influences of nature on the art of various times and places. Students can directly study different natural forms for use in creating their compositions based on what is in the world around them.

Me and My Family in Art
Late Session: July 25 - July 29; 9:30 am - 3:30 pm
Grades K-2: Students begin by exploring how the theme of ‘family’ has been used throughout history in paintings, illustrations, books, and other visual media. Then, using family adventures, important memories, and daily happenings, young children use words and pictures to tell their own stories. Emphasis is on the use of descriptive words, personal experiences, expressive writing, and verbal story-telling. Shared narratives and collaborative work help students add richness and imagination to their stories. Using a visual journal, students record and embellish life experiences into fantastic adventures with a personal twist.

High School Studios
Grades 9-12
Portfolio Building (at The St. Paul's Schools)
Late Session: July 25 - July 29; 9:30 am - 3:30 pm
Grades 9-12: This intense studio workshop begins with a review of students’ current art portfolios, with discussion about what a well-rounded high school portfolio might look like. Students keep a reflective journal and sketchbook as they identify areas to strengthen in their artwork. Working independently with the instructor, students then develop a plan for tailored art prompts intended to highlight skills and round out their portfolios for presentation. This course is especially designed for students who need a portfolio for entrance into college but is also open to those who wish to employ a more independent course of study. Note: Due to the independent nature of this course, class size is capped at 10 students.

Where will the classes be held?
In-person YPS and HSS classes will be held on campus in MICA’s Fox Building and at The Ward Center for the Arts at The St. Paul’s Schools in Brooklandville, MD.

Online classes will be held via zoom. Students will utilize the same Zoom link for each class. Zoom information will be provided once enrolled.
I’m interested in taking a class in person. What are the COVID-related guidelines?
We’re excited to welcome you back to campus. We are currently in Operational Mode 4 to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable educational experience with MICA. See Operational Mode 4 webpage for more information; this info will also be included in the Getting Started Guide with your registration confirmation email. To note: masks are required for all individuals taking an in-person class.
What are MICA’s current cleaning protocols?
Facilities Management has implemented enhanced cleaning and sanitizing protocols due to the pandemic that are consistent with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance for higher education institutions, including a focus on high-touch areas and sanitizing frequency. EPA N-List antimicrobial products for use against SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) are being utilized such as:
-SOP Green Klean Chlorinated Disinfectant
-Clarion25 with Microban cleaning solvent
-Floor wax which contains Microban with Clarion25
Microban Professional kills 99.9% of bacteria in just 60 seconds and provides up to 24 hours of protection from bacteria growth — even after multiple touches. Areas that are cleaned, disinfected and sanitized by Facilities Management include public areas, restrooms, stairs, railings, elevators, door handles, office corridors, conference rooms (public), classrooms, lobbies, kitchenettes (not including appliance interiors, utensils and dishes). Departments/individuals are responsible for cleaning: studio lab equipment, office interiors (furniture, display boards) and personal items (computers, screens, phones).
How will I access the software needed for the class?
Once enrolled, you will receive a MICA email with a link to your Getting Started Guide. Please check the email that you used to register for the class.
To note: The email you receive once you are enrolled will also include instructions to create your MICA credentials as well as login instructions to access tools and software necessary for your class such as: Canvas, Adobe Creative Suite, Zoom, and Google Drive.
I’m enrolled in an in person YPS class. What should I bring? Are materials included?
We recommend that students wear a smock or clothes that can get messy! Materials will be provided for in-person learning. Students should also bring a personal water bottle and snacks.
I’m enrolled for an online class. How will I interact with classmates?
Online classes will be held via Zoom, where peer and instructor discussions and critiques will be conducted. Students will utilize the same Zoom link for each class.
Will I be on Zoom the entire time?
Class format and “Zoom time” will be structured to accommodate the needs of each class. Most classes incorporate a mix of instructor-led discussion, critique and independent work time.

I’m enrolled in an online YPS class. How will I get my materials kit?
Students registered and enrolled in YPS or HSS online will receive materials kits in the mail (to the shipping address the student used to register). Material kits will ship 1 to 2 weeks before the start of class. Please understand that the mail may be delayed due to Covid-19 related issues, and we appreciate your patience as we work to get you materials. We recommend early registration for this reason. Please note, material kits cannot be mailed to international addresses.

The scholarship deadline for Young People’s Studios and High School Studios are:
